REVENUE RhPAL ACT. The Wsr Revenue Taxes that Were tleminaied Tuesday. i ce revecae repeal act, uwa re moves all that U left of the war tax, goes into t fleet on the first day of July, tie beginning of the fiscal year. On ibis lat tbe internal revecae law will retam to the point at which tbey were at the beginning of the SpauUh-Ameriean war. At, the commencement of hostilities Congress, in the endeavor to increase the revenues of the government com menea rate with the increased ex pengta caused by the enormous out lay in conducting the war, raised the tax 50 per cent on all things already taxed, and went untaxed from the time of the removal of the eaine after the great civil war. One year ago the tax on beer was reduced from $2 per barrel, with a discount of per cent, miking it tl 85 per barrel to $1.60 per barrel, with no discount. Oo tbe first of July the tax will be $1 per barrel. The o tarn d tax on bank checks. bills of lading, express receipts, tele graph: messages and warehouse re ceipts was repealed last year. There was left a small fraction of the stamp taxes on brokers' contracts, drafts and bills of exchange; all these are now wiped ouk similar action baa been taken in regard to cigars, which are put back substantially to tbe old rates. On manufactured tobacco the tax will be reduced from, 9, C, 10 to 6 .cents per pound. Cures Eozem5and Itching Hn-"ors TbronKh tbe Blood Costa Notb- to Try It. B B. '"I an olliged to you for introJucing me to some old acquaintances," he said to his physician after an illness which had reduced his corpulence. "Who are they, my lord?" ased the doctor, and the prime minister replied, ""My ribs, which I have not felt for many years until now." Lord North had no love for music. A friend who begged him to" subscribe for a sea son of concerts urged as a reason the fact that Lord North's brother did so. "Yes," said North, "and if I were as deaf as my brother I would subscribe too." George III. once asked the premier the charac ter of a well known officeseeker. "He is, your majesty," said North, "secretary of Etate for Ireland, a man on whom, if your majesty were pleased to bestow the United King dom, he would ask for the Isle of Man as a potato garden." Proving the Rule. The following tale is told of Cap tain Lindsay, a British officer who wa3 killed at Brakenlaagte. The 6tory illustrates at once the courage and ignorance of the men who went to South Africa to fight the Boers. It was at Magersfontein that the young officer was walking up and down encouraging the men. He had just said laughingly: "You mustn't mind these fellows. You know they never hit any one," when he was himself hit by a bullet and seriously wounded. As the bearers came up to take him off, he was able to turn round to his men and say, with a smile, "Well, that's the ex ception that proves the rule." Chi cago News. Sarah's Ways. A recent writer says of Sarah Bernhardt: "It takes years off your age to see Sarah. The last time I saw her she was about twenty, and now she is only sixteen. One thing I learned from her own hps, and that is that the cranks who make out that she owes her perpetual youth to very limited sleep are en tirely in the wrong. Ihe theater over, she delights in. two or three glasses of beer, and then for a solid nine hours of sleep, and pity help the servant who disturbs her." Irish Emigration. In Ireland for years emigration has been, as it were, a fever. From the time they arrive at the age of consciousness boys and girls in that country are turning their hearts and their eyes to the lands beyond the seas, whither bo many of their kith and kin have flown before them. "He's going to America," a phrase that should have the saddest of all meanings to them, is for the young .people of Ireland only the expression of a fondly cherished hope. Donahoc's Magazine.
